If you’re currently on a healing journey, here are 5 books on healing every Black woman should read. As we travel through life, we’ve all encountered situations and circumstances that have left us broken – spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally. Just because you’ve been broken, however, doesn’t mean you have to live in brokenness. You may not be the reason you’re broken, but your healing is your responsibility. Here are 5 books that will equip you with the tools you need to help you get there:
The Strong Black Woman

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the strong Black woman trope. Honestly, just thinking about it exhausts me. In her book, The Strong Black Woman, Marita Golden reveals the negative mental and physical impacts living out the strong Black woman narrative has on Black women. Golden also reveals stories from Black women who chose to do things differently by asking for help when they needed it, built lives that offered healing and changed what it means to be strong. The Strong Black Women can be purchased here.
Self-Healing Power and Therapy

While technology and modern advancements are nice, sometimes it’s necessary to look to the past for better solutions. Author Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau reaches back to the old teachings of Africa to share wisdom on self-healing and therapy. In Self-Healing Power and Therapy, Fu-Kiau covers techniques on both mental and physical self-healing practices. Self-Healing Power and Therapy can be purchased here.
The Unapologetic Guide To Black Mental Health

Mental health has long been a taboo topic in the Black community. Recently, however, we’ve started to make inroads into bringing the conversation about our mental health out of the shadows and into the forefront. Recognizing how unique the Black experience is, especially here in the United States, Dr. Rheeda Walker penned The Unapologetic Guide To Black Mental Health to pinpoint and address our needs. Dr. Walker shares tools to help readers achieve mental and emotional wellness. The Unapologetic Guide To Black Mental Health can be purchased here.
Black Women’s Mental Health

Just as the Black experience has a unique impact on mental health, so does the Black woman experience. While Black men and women share similar experiences that impact our mental health, we as Black women have a whole different set of circumstances that impact us differently. Black Women’s Mental Health seeks to address those particular differences. It brings together contributors from a number of disciplines including psychology, law and medicine to create a framework for addressing Black women’s wellness in order to provide real solutions. Homecoming

Homecoming author and clinical psychologist Dr. Thema Bryant knows a thing or two about healing. Having survived sexual assault and evacuation from a civil war in Liberia, Dr. Bryant has been through some things. She’s also made the healing journey and come out the other side to share not only her story, but also the wisdom she’s gained along the way. “Healing starts with recognizing and expressing emotions in an honest way and reconnecting with the neglected parts of yourself, but it can’t be done in a vacuum,” says Dr. Bryant. In Homecoming, Dr. Bryant uses therapeutic approaches as well as spiritual practices to give readers the tools they need to heal. Homecoming can be purchased here.
