7 Tips on Creating a Dope Space

Since the pandimic hit, alot of us have been sheltering in place and spending alot more time at home. With being at home that much, it’s important to have a dope space you want to be in. Unfortunately, that dope space isn’t just going to create itself – you have to be intentional and create it. I know what you’re thinking, “Oh great, yet another thing to add to my never ending, to-do list.” Just hear me out though – not only is this necessary, but it’ll be fun too (I promise). Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips on creating a dope space:

Start With A Blank Slate

In order to create a dope space, you have to start with a clean slate. That’s right – de-clutter. Strip your space down to nothing but the essentials. It’s easier to create a  space when you’re starting from scratch. You can always add later.

Color Matters

Pick a color that  you love and don’t mind seeing 24/7/365; one that you find restful. Some traditionally restful colors are greys, blues and greens. If you want more options to consider, take a quick look at a color wheel. Looking for something more custom? Take a trip to your local paint store or the paint department at your local hardware store. Don’t limit yourself to paint – wallpaper is fair game too. Just keep in mind how the color or pattern will function in your space.

Add The Love

This is where the fun begins. Now is the time to start adding in the things that you love. For me, that looks like a beautiful crystal light fixture, fresh flowers, scented candles and soft music. For you, that might look like pictures of your family and pets, tons of pillows or beautiful artwork.

Texture, Texture, Texture

By definition, it’s against the law for a dope space to be boring, so go ahead and add some texture. Pom pom pillows, a faux fur rug or a fluffy chair are a few examples of how you can incorporate texture into your space.

Lighting

Lighting is an important, yet often overlooked element in diy decor.  Don’t dial it in and settle for the typical, harsh, office building florescent lighting. Take the opportunity to install a fancy chandelier or light fixture. Also, don’t forget about the natural light – if the dope space you’re creating is your bedroom, a great set of blackout drapes will allow you to control the outside light. Finally, consider opting for a dimmer switch, that way you can have maximum control. Don’t forget about the floor and table lamps.

Add A Little Nature

I don’t know about you, but I find nature very calming. There are a number of ways you can incorporate nature into your space – plants, fresh flowers, a water feature, white noise, the possibilities are endless.

Control The Noise

Limit the outside noise in your space. Unless it’s noise that you specifically incorporated in the space (white noise, music), cut it. The idea is to make your space as restful and as invitinging as possible.
