Contrary to popular belief, it’s possible for you to be single and satisfied. While mainstream society likes to paint singlehood as a life sentence, without the possibility of parole, it’s not. Singleness isn’t something to be tolerated; it can actually be enjoyable and satisfying. Curious to know how? Here are a few tips on how to be single and satisfied:
Self Discovery
Quick question – how many of us can honestly say we know ourselves inside and out? What we like, what we don’t like, our standards for a mate, our life plan, etc.? Being single is the perfect time and opportunity to engage in self discovery. The more you know yourself, the better you’re able to identify what you want and need for your life, whether it’s a career opportunity or a mate. When you truly know yourself, you begin to see very quickly 99% of what’s available isn’t for you, and that’s ok. Knowing yourself, fully, will allow you to be satisfied in your singleness.
Know Your Value
When you’re a woman of substance and depth and you know your value, you’re not so quick to jump into a relationship just to be in a relationship. There’s something about knowing your value that settles you. When you know how much you bring to the table, you’re not afraid to eat alone when the only other option is having someone pull up with nothing but an appetite. Knowing your value and refusing to waste it on the wrong people will help you to be satisfied in your singleness.
Invest in Yourself
One of the best things you can do in your singleness is invest in yourself. Real talk – personal growth is a choice. While you’re single and have the time, invest in your spiritual, mental, emotional and physical well-being. Also, when you’ve taken the time to invest in yourself, you’re not willing to let someone into your life unless s/he is making the same types of personal investment.
Invest in Your Existing Relationships
Romantic relationships aren’t the only relationships worth investing in. When you’re single, you have more time to invest into your family and friendships. Romantic relationships can come and go, but relationships with family and friends tend to last longer so don’t be afraid to invest.
Take Up Hobbies
Single doesn’t have to equal bored and lonely. Having hobbies you enjoy can help you be satisfied in your singleness. When you’re single, you have the time and space to try out different activities, whether it’s swimming, biking, cooking, wine tasting, traveling, etc.
Stop Focusing on being Single
This point is towards the end of the list, but it could easily be number one – stop focusing on being single. As I stated earlier, being single isn’t a life sentence. Singleness is not a negative status to be tolerated. Your relationship status isn’t your identity and it’s only one of many things about you. Your relationship status won’t change your character or your personality. So, if you want to be satisfied and single, stop focusing on being single.
Silence the Negative Chatter
Finally, one of the best ways to be single and satisfied is to silence the negative chatter surrounding your singleness. This goes for both the internal and external negative chatter. Whenever that negative chatter pops up, shut it down Sis. Don’t give that negativity an opportunity to take root in your heart and mind.
