7 Tips for Better Skin

November 10, 2021

Here are 7 tips for better skin you don’t want to ignore. As someone who’s suffered from acne for decades, I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to my skin looking its best. Contrary to what you might think, achieving better skin doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Just following the tips below will have your skin looking its best.

Water

Water is a major key to better skin. Studies suggest you should drink the equivalent of half your body weight in water, everyday. Water helps to flush your pores. If you have oily skin like me, you’ll notice the more water you drink the less oily your skin looks. Drinking enough water is important to achieving better skin.

Eat Better

What you eat impacts your skin’s appearance. The healthier you eat, the better your skin will look. When I cut dairy and eggs (which I love) from my diet, I immediately noticed my skin’s texture improve. If you eat a diet full of processed food, high in sugar and fat, it’s bound to show on your face. Similarly, if you eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, it’ll show on your face too, but in a good way.

Exfoliate Regularly

If you want to see your skin living its best life, you need to exfoliate regularly. Exfoliating regularly turns over those old, dead skin cells, revealing the new skin underneath. Not all exfoliants are created equal. You don’t want anything too abrasive. Personally, I love Breedlove Beauty’s Tropical Fruit Exfoliating Enzyme Mask. It’s natural, gentle and smells amazing.

Get Enough Sleep

They don’t call sleep “beauty rest” for nothing. Sleep is so important; it helps improve your skin’s appearance. Your cells renew and your body heals while you sleep.

Always Take Your Makeup off Before Bed

After a long work day or a late night out, you might be tempted to crash without removing your makeup, but don’t. Your pores need to breathe. Sleeping in makeup can lead to clogged pores and eventually breakouts. Do your skin a huge favor and remove your makeup before bed. Every time.

Protect Your Face

There’s a myth that Black folks don’t need sunscreen. That’s false. Yes, the more melanated your skin, the better it handles the sun, but it still needs protecting. You especially need sunscreen if you use brightening products to even out your skin tone. What you don’t want to do is grab a sunscreen that’ll leave a white or purple cast on your beautiful skin. Try Black Girl Sunscreen to avoid all that.

Get a Facial

Finally, regular facials will help improve your skin. Cleansing alone can only do so much. Facials help deep clean your pores. You don’t have to go to a fancy spa and spend lots of money to get a good facial. You can give yourself one at home. Just follow these steps:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Steam
  3. Mask
  4. Toner
  5. Serum
