What Brings You Joy?

What brings you joy? Do you know? Joy is defined as “to experience great pleasure or delight.” In today’s world it’s more important than ever to create moments and opportunities for joy. Joy has a positive impact on both physical and mental health. Most opportunities don’t happen unless you create them. You have to be deliberate about creating those moments. So, how do you create those opportunities? Here’s how:

Identify It

In order to do what brings you joy, you have to first identify it. If you’re not sure, try some things. You might be surprised to discover some new things, as well as confirm some old ones. Knowing what you don’t like is just as important as knowing what you do like so you don’t waste time doing those things. Also, what brings you joy can be simple, easy and inexpensive. Personally, I know having fresh cut flowers and scented candles in my space brings me joy so I try to indulge in those little joys as much as possible. Knowing what gives you joy is key to living your best life.

Do More of It

Once you’ve identified what brings you joy, create a routine around it and do more of it. In addition to fresh cut flowers and scented candles, I love coffee. There’s a coffee shop near my job that sells a cappuccino I really enjoy. It doesn’t hurt that I get half off because I have an account there. When I’m in the office I go every Tuesday and Friday as my little treat. It might sound silly, but knowing I have a little treat to look forward to every Tuesday and Friday makes my day. So, what adds joy to your life? Running? Biking? Taking walks on the beach? Facials? A trip to the spa? Whatever it is, create a routine or schedule around it so you can do more of it. Life is short, so pack as much joy into it as you possibly can.

Measure the Results

Once you’ve identified what brings you joy and you’re doing more of it, measure the results. While we’d like to assume doing more of what brings us joy will produce positive results, that’s not always the case. Earlier, I mentioned I treat myself to a cappuccino every Tuesday and Friday. Since that particular coffee drink has a lot of ingredients, it’s a little high in calories. Two times a week hasn’t been bad, but I’m sure five times a week would result in me picking up a little weight. With the flowers and candles, I notice they bring me a sense of calm and peace. Whatever you’re doing that brings you joy, pay attention to the results. For some, shopping brings them joy. However, if doing all that shopping is resulting in you maxing out credit cards, overstuffed closets and failing to pay other bills, those aren’t positive results.

So, what brings you joy? What are you doing to identify those things? How are you cultivating more joy in your life? What are you doing to create a routine of joy in your life? Drop a comment below.
