Double Cleansing – is it Worth the Hype?

March 2, 2021

Have you ever heard of double cleansing? Until a few months ago, neither had I. As a self-described beauty product and skin care junkie, I was shocked I hadn’t come across this concept sooner.

So, just what is double cleansing? It’s simply cleaning your face twice. It’s a routine very common in Korean beauty skin care regimens. Simple, right? Why hadn’t I tried this sooner? There are two common methods for double cleansing – one involves cleaning your face with oil first and then following up with a facial cleanser; the second involves cleaning your face twice with your facial cleanser of choice.

So, is it worth the hype? In a nutshell, yes. I’ve tried both methods, but double cleansing with a facial cleanser is my absolute favorite method. Initially I tried double cleaning with oil. I used grape seed oil, since it’s a light weight oil that doesn’t clog your pores. Since I have oily, acne prone skin, the last thing I need are clogged pores. While the results were fine, they weren’t earth shattering. After listening to a podcast episode on beauty, I decided to try it with my African Black soap instead of grape seed oil. The end results – game changer! The African Black soap that I use is made from all natural ingredients, so I don’t find it drying or irritating. With oily, sensitive, acne prone skin, that’s important. What were the results? My skin looks better – my pores don’t look as large and my skin isn’t as oily. Seriously, my skin gets so oily that by the end of the day you could probably fry an egg on my forehead. Since I’ve been double cleansing with my soap, my forehead doesn’t look like an oil slick anymore. Also, the overall texture of my skin looks smoother.

So, how often should you double cleanse? That’s up to you. When I was doing it with grape seed oil, I only did it once a day. When I switched over to double cleansing with my facial cleanser, I started out doing it twice a day, but noticed my face began feeling very sensitive so I went back to once a day. How often you choose to double cleanse will depend on your skin type and your cleanser. Doing it twice a day was a little too much for my sensitive skin. You may have to experiment a little to see what works best for you.

So, do you double cleanse? If not, would you consider trying it? Drop a comment below.
