Sis, are you playing too small? Greatness is something we’re all capable of; greatness isn’t reserved for a select few people. The difference between those who accomplish great things and those who sit back and watch them is belief – the belief that she is capable of greatness. So, how do you know if you’re playing too small? Here are a few clues:
Settling for Situations That Don’t Fulfill You
Settling for situations that don’t fulfill us is one way we play too small. Whether it’s a job, a relationship, a living situation, etc., settling for situations that don’t serve you leaves you feeling stuck, unhappy and miserable. Whenever you settle you’re playing too small.
Not Going After What You Want
Most of us have dreams for the future and things that we want. Unfortunately, what a lot of us do is self-sabotage by talking ourselves out of those dreams, and letting doubt take over. As the saying goes, you only live once so go after what you want. If you want to change careers, do it; want to go back to school, go; want to start your own business, start it. Even if things don’t work out as you had planned, at least you tried. You only regret those chances that you don’t take. And who’s to say that going after what you want won’t exceed your wildest dreams?
Doubting Yourself
If you don’t believe in yourself, how do you expect anyone else to believe in you? Doubting yourself is a sure fire way to keep you in the small zone. Having confidence in you isn’t the same as being delusional – your talents, experiences and expertise are valuable, so acknowledge and own them. Doubting yourself will keep you playing too small.
Not Believing You’re Worthy of More
Sometimes we have it stuck in our heads that great things are for others, but not for us. Maybe someone in your past convinced you that you weren’t deserving of better; that you were only good enough for ok, but not great. Sometimes we let our past failures convince us that we’re not worthy of more – we tried for something, failed and figured it didn’t work out because we went after something bigger than what we deserved. Kill that noise and repeat after me, “I am worthy of more.” You don’t have to settle for ok or that will do. Believe that you’re worthy of more then go after it because you deserve it.
The Comfort Zone
Ah yes, the good old familiar comfort zone – the place where greatness goes to die and good enough resides. You’ve heard the saying a million times, but it’s worth repeating – nothing good ever comes from your comfort zone. If you’re comfortable, chances are you’re settling for less than your best. Often times we settle for the comfort zone because we fear the unknown and at least in the comfort zone, we know what to expect. If you don’t believe anything else I say, believe this – nothing great ever comes from the comfort zone. If you find yourself comfortable you’re probably playing too small.
