Here are five Black owned handbag brands we love. August is Black Business Month. Personally, I believe in supporting Black owned businesses year around. Not only is it important to keep the dollar circulating in our community, but it’s equally as important to help Black owned businesses create jobs, legacy and wealth. So ladies, if you’re looking to buy a new handbag, here are a few Black owned handbag brands you should consider:
London based designer Joanna Vanderpuije launched her namesake label in late 2017. Vanderpujie honed her skills working for a number of brands, including Alexander McQueen and Diane Von Furstenberg. Vanderpuije specializes in screen-printed textiles, which evolve from her hand drawings, paintings and mixed media.
LeyeLesi is an African based brand, specializing in not only handbags, but footwear and jewelry as well. Their handbags are made from sustainable leathers and indigenous Adire fabrics, sourced locally and made in Nigeria. Due to sourcing its sustainable leather locally, each LeyeLesi handbag is a limited edition piece.
R-KI-TEKT is a brand inspired by travel and color. Each piece is uniquely handcrafted and infused with elements of West Indian and African Diasporic culture.
Established in 2017, Ashya is a New York based design label specializing in unisex travel accessories. The brand is dedicated to creating well-crafted designs that unify luxury and utilitarian principles.

Bami is a London based brand, specializing in hand-stitched leather accessories. Full disclosure: I recently purchased the Yoc Mini Tote, in camo and it’s so good. The brand recently released pieces in its signature orange leather, which also have me ready to break the bank.
