How to handle a toxic work environment can be very tricky because there are so many things to consider. Above all else, to best protect yourself, you have to make sure you handle things properly. Since we spend most of our waking hours at work, it’s in our best interest that that environment be healthy. A work environment can be toxic because of co-workers, bosses, customers, etc. While there’s no one size fits all formula for the situation, here are some tips on how to handle a toxic work environment.
Sis, Don’t Pop Off (Arrest the Spirit of Clap-back)
First and foremost, you have to manage your emotions. More specifically, Sis, please don’t pop off. No matter what the situation is, you have to arrest the spirit of clap-back. Why? You don’t want to give your employer any ammunition to use against you. Furthermore, you don’t want to build a reputation as a problem employee. A negative reputation won’t serve you well presently or in the future. A negative reputation makes your claims seem less credible. For your own sake, don’t pop off.
Make Sure Your Sh*t is A-1
Now, hear me out on this one. Sometimes when we have problems we struggle to see what part we may play in them. Your complaints seem less credible when your sh*t isn’t A-1. For example, if you’re chronically late for work or have poor work performance, your employer complaints won’t be taken as seriously. Sure, your work environment can negatively impact your mood and job performance. However, you have to first make sure your affairs are in order.
Document, Document, Document
When you’re in a toxic work environment and you’re being mistreated, document everything. Keep a detailed account of who, what, when and where. Also, keep a paper trail of everything. Communicate and confirm everything via e-mail. You will need this information should you need to take legal action.
Seek Wise Counsel
This is the most important point of all. When you’re working in a toxic work environment and are being mistreated, seek wise counsel. Specifically, find a qualified labor and employment attorney in your jurisdiction. If your circumstances require legal action, an attorney will advise you on the proper steps to take. Also, seek legal counsel sooner rather than later. An attorney consultation is worth your investment just to make sure you’re properly protecting your legal interests.
Create an Exit Strategy
No matter how good the job title, the perks or the salary, nothing is worth tolerating a toxic work environment. Unless things turn around or you see a clear path forward, you should start developing an exit strategy. You want to leave on your own terms. Create both a short-term and long-term exit strategy. Start looking for new opportunities, but also, save money should you need to leave sooner, rather than later. Do everything you can to make your exit smooth.
Tend to Your Mental Health
Above all else, tend to your mental health. Toxic environments can have a tremendously negative impact on your mental health. While we all need to make a living, nothing is worth sacrificing your mental health. If you find your work is causing you stress, seek therapy. Asking for help and looking out for your mental health doesn’t make you weak. This is one time you shouldn’t suck it up and push through. Do whatever you need to do to look out for your own best interests.
