Turning Your Dreams Into Reality

Turning your dreams into reality is possible. It won’t be easy, but it’s doable. Hopefully you’re not living day to day, without a dream in sight or a vision for your future. If you are, go back to our post on Make Time to Dream. If, however, you do have a dream or two and you’re ready to turn your dreams into reality, here are a few tips for making them happen.

Believe They’re Possible

In order to turn your dreams into reality, you have to believe they’re possible. If you don’t believe your dreams are possible, who will? It doesn’t matter who believes in your dreams if you don’t. Turning your dreams into reality will take every ounce of belief you can muster. If you don’t believe your dreams are possible you’re done before you can even get started.

Write Them Down

Writing your dreams down is key to turning them into reality. No, I don’t necessarily believe there’s some magical power in writing your dreams down, but I do believe writing your dreams down makes them clear. Also, I believe writing your dreams down helps you to remember them. With the day-to-day hustle and bustle we all deal with, I wouldn’t rely on my own memory to recall my dreams. Your dreams are far too important to leave them to your faulty memory. Write them down and make them plain.

Protect Your Dreams at All Cost

One of the most important keys to turning your dreams into reality is to protect them at all cost. You especially need to protect your dreams in their infancy. The worst thing you can do is exposing your dreams, in their infancy, to non-believers. All it takes is telling your dreams to the wrong person at the wrong time to derail them. Think of your dreams like seeds. Just like seeds, your dreams need to be nurtured and protected when they’ve first planted. When your dreams are young and fragile, you can’t afford to allow anyone to sow seeds of doubt in your mind. When those seeds start to mature, take root and become stronger, they can withstand storms. You don’t need others to buy into your dreams to make them happen. Your belief plus action is what will turn your dreams into reality.

Take Small Steps

Sometimes we feel we have to do everything all at once to realize our dreams, but that’s not true. Taking small steps are important in turning your dreams into reality. Some of the dreams I wanted to accomplish were being an art collector, philanthropist and investor. A few years ago, I wrote those dreams down, with several others. The other day, I sat back and realized I had achieved all three of these dreams. Now, I’m not doing any of the three on the level I ultimately intend to, but I’m taking small steps in that direction. Small steps matter in turning your dreams into reality.

Consistency is Key

You have to be consistent in order to turn your dreams into reality. You won’t accomplish your dreams all at once. Realizing your dreams usually takes consistent effort. You’re going to hit some roadblocks and set backs along the way, but your consistent effort and unwillingness to quit is key to accomplishing your dreams. One of my dreams was to work for a specific corporation. Over the years, I can’t tell you how many times I applied for jobs with this corporation. Yes, I faced rejection time and again, but I didn’t let that stop me. I was consistent in pursuing my dream. Eventually, I applied for and was hired by this corporation in 2021. Consistency is key to realizing your dreams.

Stop Setting Deadlines

If you want to turn your dreams into reality, you have to stop setting deadlines. Deadlines are dream killers that keep you from turning them into reality. You can’t control time, circumstances, or reality therefore it’s irresponsible to set a deadline for accomplishing your dreams. Now, I’m not telling you not to hold yourself accountable, but I am suggesting you give yourself grace in terms of the time it takes you to realize those dreams. No matter how good your plan is for accomplishing your dreams or how consistent you are in pursuing them, you probably won’t realize them by your deadline. That’s okay though – just keep taking steps and being consistent until you do.

Focus on the Mission, not the Method

Finally, if you want to turn your dreams into reality, you have to focus on the mission, not the method. Being too married to your plan can interfere with you realizing your dreams. There may be things outside of your control that will require you to adjust your plans. Just like there are multiple routes to reach a given destination, there can be multiple routes to realizing your dreams. Stay focused on the mission, but remain flexible on the method.
