What Makes a Great Scented Candle

If you’re a scented candle lover like myself, you’ve probably pondered on what makes a great scented candle. No, not all scented candles are created equal. There are definitely levels to it. Scented candles are great because they have a way of elevating any space. For me, here’s what a great one entails:

Non-Toxic Ingredients

Ingredients are the most important component of a stellar scented candle. For years, I’ve burned scented candles, but never gave a second thought to the ingredients. As I’ve grown into more of a candle connoisseur, I’ve started to really pay attention to what goes into them. Most of the scented candles sold via regular retail are full of toxic ingredients. Shocking, right? So every time you burn one of those mainstream candles, you’re releasing toxic ingredients into your living space. A great scented candle is made of non-toxic ingredients such as soy, coconut and other natural ingredients. It won’t be harmful to your health.

Great Throw

Candle throw is also important. So, what is candle throw? It’s the distance a candle can distribute its aroma. There’s nothing worse than buying a scented candle that doesn’t distribute its scent well. Personally, I don’t want to have to sit right next to my candle in order to smell it. Since you can’t tell until you burn it, determining throw might be a little trial and error. A quality scented candle has great throw.

Clean Burn

A top tier scented candle burns clean. Again, there’s nothing worse than a smoky candle. A high quality fragrance candle will not leave soot and black smudges all around container. As long as you’re trimming your wick, the candle should burn clean.

So, now that you know what goes into a great candle, here are a few candle care tips:

  1. Trim your wick after every burn.
  2. Don’t power burn. You should only burn your candle a maximum of 4 hours.
  3. Invest in a candle warmer to get to the very bottom of your candle.

Finally, here are some of my favorite scented candle companies and scents:
