Who Are You Listening To?

Who are you listening to? Nowadays, everyone has a platform and a message they want to spread. Whether you realize it or not, whoever has your ear has access to your mind. That’s why it’s very important to vet who you lend your ear to. Personally, there are three types of people I never listen to – those with no fruit, fake fruit or stolen fruit. Confused by the fruit analogy? Let me break it down a little further:

 

No Fruit

I don’t know about you, but I can’t listen to folks who have no evidence to prove that their advice is solid. If you’re advising me on credit, yours better be top tier. Similarly, f you’re advising me on relationships, yours better be solid. If you’re advising me on finances, you better have some. Bottom line: Ma’am, I need to see some receipts. I need to see some evidence that you know what you’re talking about.

 

Fake Fruit

Social media has given rise to a lot of what I like to call, “fake fruit.” Anyone can pretend to be whomever they choose because, who really digs beneath the surface anyway, right? If you say you’re a successful entrepreneur, with millions in sales, and are willing to teach others how to do the same, who’s really going to know you’re faking it until you make it? The thing about fake fruit is it seems too good to be true because it is. It’s perfect because it’s not real. So the next time you’re listening to an “expert,” be sure to take a good look at their fruit to make sure it’s real.

 

Stolen Fruit

Finally, there are some who have real fruit, but it’s stolen. My friend Tasha, a business coach, has been the victim of having her content repeatedly stolen, only to watch those thieves profit handsomely off her brilliance. On the surface, they appear successful, but underneath, it’s all smoke and mirrors. The problem with listening to folks with stolen fruit is they can’t tell you how to reproduce their results because they never produced them to begin with.

 

Now that you know who not to listen to, who should you listen to? People who’ve produced real fruit.

  

Real Fruit

Producing real fruit tends to follow a pattern: (a) it requires preparation, (b) it requires work, (c) it takes time, (d) it requires consistency and (e) it requires patience. Anyone producing real fruit isn’t going to try to sell you on a quick, glamorous, trouble-free solution because there’s not one. Real results, like real fruit, take time. Listen to the people who’re going to give you the real. Not only are their results proven, but they can also be reproduced.
